ANPR for Yemen

Yemen License Plate Format

Yemen vehicle registration plates entered regular usage in 1993. Current version started 2018 using FE-Schrift typeface for alphanumeric and Square Kufic typeface for Arabic text. Plates distinguished by background color and Arabic text above numerical code adjacent to country name (اليمن). Numerical section divided into 2 parts with horizontal line: left shows 1-2 digit governorate code (1-22), right shows 1-6 digit vehicle identifier. Due to ongoing conflict, registration systems vary: North (Houthi-controlled) retains 1993 formats, Aden (UAE-backed) uses UAE-style plates, Southern governorates (Presidential Leadership Council) developed individual formats with uniform FE-Schrift and Square Kufic typeface.

Temporary system (unclear duration), Mandatory typeface numerals, Square Kufic Arabic text since 2018, top row “ج – ي” (J.Y.=Republic Yemen) + “تعز – مؤقت” (Taiz – Temporary), two classes: Class 1 (private/hire) black on blue, Class 2 (commercial trucks/vans) black on red

Al Mahrah Governorate

Black on white, governorate name (المهرة) + 4 digits, left strip with letter M on color-coded background (blue=private, yellow=hire, red=commercial, green=government), similar structure to Hadhramaut, unique serif font

Marib Governorate

Black numbers on white, governorate name (مأرب) + 4 digits, governorate name on color-coded background, left strip with letter M matching background color (blue=private, yellow=motorcycle/hire, red=commercial), unique serif font, note: same letter M as Al Mahrah

Shabwah Governorate

Since February 2020, black on white, governorate name (شبوة) + 4 digits, left strip with letter W on color-coded background (blue=private, yellow=hire, red=commercial, green=government), temporary plates have right strip marked “مؤقت” on blue, unique serif font, police plates include letter code

Hadhramaut Governorate

Black on white, governorate name in Arabic (حضرموت) + 4 digits, left strip with letter H in black on color-coded background (blue=private, yellow=hire, red=commercial, green=government), temporary plates have right strip marked “مؤقت” (temporary) on blue, unique serif font
