Danish License Plate Format

Danish vehicle registration plates consist of two letters and five digits in simple serial format with no geographic location information. Denmark was last EU member to adopt euro plate format in October 2009, with optional EU stripe. Plates are white with black text and red border, with holographic security strip. Unlike most European countries, Danish plates follow vehicle ownership changes rather than staying with vehicle.

Special Plate Types in Denmark

Commercial

Black characters on yellow background, same alphanumeric format, used for vans, trucks, commercial transport.

Temporary Plates

“Fixed” temporary plate used by vehicle manufacturers, importers, distributors or repairers.
Temporary export plate – red field showing the year of validity with five digits.

Diplomatic

Blue plates with white text. Diplomatic plates always use the numbers “76” and “77” and are divided into diplomatic plates and international organizations, like UN. EU strip and hologram now on all new plates.

Trailer

2 letters + 4 digits; typically black on white.

Vanity

Customizable letter/number combinations; separate rules, can include Danish letters (Æ, Ø, Å).

Historical

Black background with white text for historic vehicles.

Airport

Plates used only by airports with specific letter rules (e.g., RF + numbers).

Hearses

Registered as yellow-plate cars (commercial use, but physically white reflecting standard).
