Vietnam License Plate Format
Vietnam vehicle registration plates are mandatory for motor vehicles on public roads. Aluminium plates with black characters on white/yellow backgrounds (commercial vehicles yellow since August 2020). Right side displays Vietnam flag and VN country code. Introduced 2003 (5-digit format 2010, current template 2020, latest revision 2023). Front plates 47×11cm, rear 27×20cm (both 6×12cm in 2020-2021). Letters I, J, O, Q, W omitted; R reserved for trailers; includes Vietnamese character Đ.

DDL-DDD.DD (2-digit regional code + 1 serial letter + 3-digit number with decimal point)

Commercial Vehicles
Black on yellow (mandatory since August 1, 2020), formats NNL-NNNN or NNL-NNN.NN
State-Owned/Government
White on blue, formats NNL-NNN.NN or NNL-NNNN (regional code + serial letter + number)
Temporary
Black on white two-line, format TNN-NNN.NN (T + regional code + number)
Military
White on red, automobiles AB-12-34 (unit code + number), motorcycles AB/123, mopeds AB/123A, 2021 standardized templates feature Vietnam People’s Army emblem
Diplomatic
Black/red status code on white, Hanoi-based: 80-123-NG-45 (NG=ngoại giao/diplomatic); outside Hanoi: 43-123-NG-45 (regional code replaces 80)
International Organizations
Hanoi-based: 80-123-QT-45 (QT=quốc tế/international, similar numbering); outside Hanoi: 12-QT-345-67 (regional code + QT + country code + number)
Foreign Citizens (NN=nước ngoài)
Black on yellow with black border, format 12-NN-345.67 or 12-NN/345.67, for vehicles owned/rented by foreigners/stateless persons
Motorcycles
Black on white two-line rear only, formats NN-LL/NNN.NN (current), NN-LN/NNNN, NN-LN/NNN.NN (older still valid)
