UK License Plate Format
UK vehicle registration plates are rectangular with prescribed font characters. Front plates white with black text, rear plates yellow with black text (mandatory since 1973). Optional left side band with national identifier (UK since September 2021, previously GB) and flag. Size 520×111mm. Current system introduced September 2001. Plates manufactured by registered suppliers, must display supplier name and postcode. Vehicles of reigning monarch on official business exempt from displaying plates.

AB 12 CDE (2-letter area code + 2-digit age identifier + 3-letter random sequence)
Script
Latin alphabet (excludes I, Q, Z as area codes), Arabic numerals
Regional Codes
Based on historic DVLA office locations using a mnemonic letter system (not current residence). The first letter of the area code indicates a broad registration region:
A – Anglia (Peterborough, Norwich, Ipswich), B – Birmingham, C – Cymru/Wales (Cardiff, Swansea, Bangor), D – Deeside (Chester, Shrewsbury), E – Essex (Chelmsford), F – Forest and Fens (Nottingham, Lincoln), G – Garden of England (primarily Maidstone area), H – Hampshire/Dorset/Isle of Wight (Bournemouth, Portsmouth), and others
Special Plate Types in United Kingdom
Historic Vehicles (pre-1980)
White/silver on black background permitted for vehicles constructed before January 1, 1980 registered in historic vehicle class
Zero-Emissions Vehicles
Optional green left side band instead of standard colors, may include UK identifier and flag
Northern Ireland
Modified system using format AAA 1234 (3 letters + up to 4 digits), uses letters I or Z representing Ireland, administered by DVLA
Q Plates
Black on white/yellow, format Q### AAA, issued for vehicles of indeterminate age (kit cars, substantial rebuilds, insufficient documentation)
Diplomatic
Black on white/yellow, format ### D/X ### (3 digits + D or X + 3 digits), first 3 digits identify country/organization, second 3 digits are serial (starting 101 for diplomats)
Military
White/silver on black, format ## AA ## or AA ## AA (since 1949), various formats for different services, can be one/two/three rows
Trade Plates
Red on white, various formats (### ABC, #### A, ##### numeric, A#### current), for motor dealers and vehicle testers, identify license holder not vehicle
Trailer (International Use)
Single letter + 7 digits over two lines, mandatory since 2019 for trailers over 750kg (commercial) or 3,500kg (non-commercial) traveling to Vienna Convention countries
Personalized/Vanity Plates
Any valid format meeting age restrictions (cannot make vehicle appear newer than actual age), dateless pre-1963 and Northern Ireland plates considered ageless
