Taiwanese License Plate Format
Taiwanese vehicle registration plates use black characters on white background. Standard size 320×150mm (similar to North American plates). Format consists of combinations of Latin alphabet (A-Z), Arabic numerals (0-9) and dashes (-). Certain special types incorporate Chinese characters. Plates issued and managed by Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MoTC). National numbering system prevents serial duplication across jurisdictions (Mexico Mode). Different jurisdictions follow specific numbering rules (e.g., XY-**** only issued by Kaohsiung City, WZ-**** only by Lienchiang County). Electric vehicles feature green ridges on top and bottom sides with white text “電動車”. Unique license plates issued for imported cars.

ABC-5678 (3 letters – 4 digits)
Script
Latin alphabet, Arabic numerals 0-3, 5-9 (numeral 4 excluded as unlucky)
Regional Codes
Single national numbering system without visible geographic identifiers displayed on plates.
However, specific letter combinations reserved for different issuing jurisdictions – certain patterns only issued by specific cities/counties (e.g., XY – exclusive to Kaohsiung City, WZ – exclusive to Lienchiang County).
Special Plate Types in Taiwan
Rental Light Vehicles
Black on white, format RAA-5678, AA-6688, 8866-AA. For cars or light trucks intended for rental use.
Military
Format 軍A-00001 with Chinese character 軍 (military). For military uses. Not managed by MoTC.
Disabled Ordinary Light Vehicles
Black on white, format WAB-5678. For private cars for disabled persons.
Rental Light Electric Vehicles
Black on white with green ridges, format REA-5678. Electric cars or light trucks for rental featuring green ridges on top and bottom sides with white words “電動車” on top side.
Electric Taxis
Black on white with green ridges, format ETC-567, EAM-5678. Electric taxis with green ridges on top and bottom sides, white words “電動車” on top side.
Ordinary Heavy Passenger Vehicles
Black on white, format PAA-567, KJA-5678, TA-001, 001-SA. Private buses not for commercial uses. Maximum weight exceeding 3,500 kg and/or more than nine seats including driver.
Large Heavy-Duty Motorcycles
Black on white, format LAB-5678, 001-AAA. Motorcycles with cubic capacity between 250-550cc or electric motorcycles with power between 40-54 hp.
Diplomatic
Chinese character formats 使 001, 外 0001, 外 0151. For vehicles belonging to foreign diplomatic missions in Taiwan. Chinese characters: 使 (embassy), 外 (foreign affairs).
Temporary
Format 臨A00001, 機臨10001 with Chinese characters 臨 (temporary), 機臨 (temporary motorcycle). Printed on paper for vehicles before registration or vehicles transiting Taiwan territory.
