ANPR for Sweden

Swedish License Plate Format

Swedish vehicle registration plates use black characters on white background with EU blue stripe displaying 12 EU stars and country identifier S on left side. Standard size 520×110mm. Current format consists of 3 letters + space + 2 digits + 1 digit/letter (ABC 123 or ABC 12A). Combination mostly random with no geographic location connection. Last character indicates month for vehicle tax payment. Registration number tied to vehicle’s VIN, remains unchanged after ownership change until vehicle scrapped or exported. All vehicles must carry front and rear plates except motorcycles (rear only), trailers (rear only), tractors and off-road machinery (front only). Plates made from embossed aluminum clad in 3M reflective film. Above plate manufacturer code and VIN printed, above last digit plate manufacture date shown. Police cars, fire trucks, public buses use same plates as private cars, cannot be distinguished by plate alone. Space between letters and numbers formerly used for taxation sticker (abolished January 2010), newer plates have narrower space.

Script

Latin alphabet, Arabic numerals. Excluded letters: I, Q, V, Å, Ä, Ö (not used). Letter O also excluded from last character position to avoid confusion with 0 (zero)

Special Plate Types in Sweden

Dealer/Trade

Black on green background, format MLB 206 (3 letters + 3 digits). Used on vehicles without registration, insurance, or vehicles which failed inspection. Not tied to specific vehicle but to plate owner. Used for short test drives and by manufacturers for vehicle testing. Sticker indicates if plate for cars, trucks or trailers. Owner must have special insurance covering test drives.

Diplomatic

Black on blue background, format DL 004 B (2 letters + 3 digits + 1 letter). First 2 letters identify diplomatic mission (AA-South Africa/Afrique du Sud, AB-Albania/Albanie, etc.). Three digits are serial number. Last letter shows diplomatic status: A-Ambassador, B-Embassy vehicles, C-Diplomat, D-Administrative/technical staff, E-Consulate, F-Consul, G-Consulate staff, I-International organisation staff.

Personal/Vanity Plates

Black on white, up to 7 characters, any text or number combination if not already used. Cost 6900 SEK (about 570 EUR). Valid 10 years, transferable between vehicles. Excluded letters (I, Q, V, Å, Ä, Ö) do not apply to personal plates. Offensive or illegal text not allowed. Works as alias to ordinary plate. Sticker declaring alias relationship must be attached in vehicle window. Same sizes as standard plates with EU blue stripe.

Temporary

White on red background, format MLB 426 (3 letters + 3 digits) with expiry day and month to left, year to right. Used for import, export and tourist plates. When imported vehicle approved, receives ordinary white plates with same registration.

Taxi

Black on yellow background, same registration format as standard plates (ABC 123 or ABC 12A). Issued after taxi approval. If no longer used as taxi or fails inspection, normal white plates reinstalled and yellow confiscated. Differ from standard plates solely by yellow background color. EU blue stripe included.

Military

Yellow digits on black background, 4-6 digits (example: 118076). Used for all military vehicles from automobiles to tanks. Cars and lorries have mounted plates, tanks and terrain vehicles have numbers painted on vehicle. Register and issuing done by Swedish Defence Materiel Administration, completely separate from civilian system.
