Singapore License Plate Format
Singapore vehicle registration plates feature a nationwide system administered by the Land Transport Authority (LTA). Standard plates use white characters on black background or black on white (front)/yellow (rear) background. Plates are made of reflective plastic with flat characters or metal-based with bolded/embossed characters. The system uses Charles Wright typeface (UK-based). All vehicles require front and rear plates. Vehicle owners can bid for numbers, retain numbers from previous vehicles, or receive automatically assigned numbers. Current system established with checksum letters since 1972, modernized from 1984.

S – Private vehicles, SH – Taxis, F – Motorcycles, G – Light Goods vehicles, Y – Heavy Goods vehicles, X – Very Heavy Goods vehicles, W – Engineering Plant, P – Private Buses, TR – Trailers, QX – Emergency, and others
Special Plate Types in Singapore
Taxis
White on black or black on white/yellow, format SH_ #### _ or SH #### _ (current series SHF), designated for taxis and Singapore-Johore Express omnibuses. Standard sizes with checksum letter.
Motorcycles
White on black or black on yellow, formats F_ _ #### _ (current series FBY) or A_ #### _ (earliest series still valid). Vowels excluded from middle position in 3-letter combinations. Checksum letter included.
Light Goods Vehicles
White on black or black on yellow, format G_ _ #### _ (current series GBN), Class 3 vehicles. Previously SG prefix used until early 1970s (now repurposed for government buses). Standard sizes with checksum.
Heavy Goods Vehicles
White on black or black on yellow, format Y_ #### _ (current series YR), Class 3/4 vehicles constructed to carry loads or passengers. Standard sizes with checksum.
Very Heavy Goods Vehicles
White on black or black on yellow, format X_ #### _ (current series XF), Class 5/prime movers not constructed to carry loads. Standard sizes with checksum letter.
Public Buses
White on black, formats SG #### _ (government-owned buses under Bus Contracting Model)
Emergency & Law Enforcement
White on black, format QX #### _, used by Singapore Police Force, Civil Defence Force, Immigration and Checkpoints Authority. No checksum letter. Includes TP prefix for Traffic Police motorcycles, LTA prefix for Land Transport Authority enforcement.
Military
White on black, format ##### MID (suffix style, up to 5 digits before MID suffix), Singapore Armed Forces vehicles. “MID” originally stood for Ministry of Interior and Defence. General officers receive 2-digit MID plates. No checksum. MP prefix for Military Police Command vehicles.
Diplomatic
Blue on white without checksum, formats S/CD ###### (Diplomatic Corps) or S/CC ###### (Consular Corps). First 3 digits identify country/organization, last 3 identify rank (101 lowest, ambassadors assigned 101). CD plates carry diplomatic immunity. NZ prefix for New Zealand diplomatic vehicles.
