Polish License Plate Format

Polish vehicle registration plates indicate the region of registration and are tied to the vehicle, not the owner. The current system introduced in 2000 features black characters pressed onto white reflective blanks with EU blue stripe, conforming to EU standards for increased visibility. Plates issued until May 1, 2006 displayed the Polish national flag in the EU stripe, while plates issued after that date show 12 EU stars instead. Standard dimensions are 520×110mm. The system uses a visible gap between area code and series. Registration plates are issued by the powiat (county) of the vehicle owner’s registered address. The first letter always denotes the voivodeship (province), with one additional letter used in cities with powiat rights and two additional letters in other powiats. Plates are invalid without two adhesive holographic stickers placed on them (and windshield sticker was required until September 2022). Pre-2001 plates (white letters on black background) can still be used indefinitely but must be replaced upon change of ownership. Due to combination depletion in some areas, extra leading characters were introduced in 2022 for several voivodeships.
