Philippine License Plate Format

Philippine vehicle registration plates, commonly known as “license plates” (Filipino: plaka), are issued and regulated by the Land Transportation Office (LTO) under the Department of Transportation (DOTr). The current system introduced in July 2018 uses aluminum plates with characters stamped and coated with reflective paint, employing FE-Schrift typeface designed to resist alteration. Standard dimensions are 390×140mm for four-wheeled vehicles and 235×135mm for motorcycles (since 2020). The system distinguishes vehicle types through color schemes and uses alphanumeric combinations where the first letter indicates the registration region. Philippines addressed significant plate backlogs since 2016 through virtual plates, conduction stickers, and temporary identification systems. Vehicle registration in the Philippines began in 1912, with the current format succeeding the widely-used 1981 series that remained in production until 2014.
