Palestinian License Plate Format

The Palestinian National Authority operates two separate vehicle registration systems: one for the West Bank and one for the Gaza Strip. West Bank plates feature green characters on a white background with a blue strip on the right side displaying the Latin letter “P” for Palestine/Palestinian Authority and the Arabic letter “ف” (Faa’) for “فلسطين” (Falasteen) or “السلطة الفلسطينية” (a-Sultat al-Filastiniya). The current West Bank system introduced in July 2018 uses a 6-character format (5 digits + 1 letter) replacing the previous 7-digit system, implemented because Ramallah Governorate was exhausting available combinations. Gaza Strip introduced its own distinct system in 2012, initially featuring a vertical Palestinian flag on the right side, updated in 2021 to include a horizontal flag with “Palestine” text pattern overlay. Standard plate size is 520×110mm for cars, with American-standard 300×150mm plates available for imported vehicles, and smaller dimensions for motorcycles. The West Bank system assigns governorate-specific letters (A-N), while Gaza uses color-coded borders and ending digits to distinguish vehicle categories.

Latin alphabet and Arabic numerals (both systems), Arabic script for “P/ف” identifier (West Bank)

A-Jenin, B-Tulkarm, C-Tubas, D-Nablus, E-Qalqilya, F-Salfit, G-Jericho, H-Ramallah, J-Jerusalem, K-Bethlehem, L-Hebron (Hebron Governorate), M-Dura (Hebron Governorate), N-Yatta (Hebron Governorate).

West Bank Plate Types in Palestine

Private Vehicles

Green text on white background, format #-####-X (e.g., 1-0123-A), governorate letter at end (A through N)

Motorcycles

Same format and colors as private vehicles, two sizes available: 1-line design 200×100mm or 2-line design 165×165mm

Public Transport

Green text on white background, taxi plates always end in “30”, format Y-XXXX-30 (using previous 7-digit system designation)

Government Vehicles

White background with red text, format XXXX (4 digits with leading zeros), for officials’ cars, ambulances, fire brigade, police, and special military police. Police vehicles receive green-on-white plates ending in “99”

Test Plates

Blue background with white text, displays word “TEST” in Arabic (اختبار) and Hebrew (במבחן) above the number, for garages and car importers

Commercial Vehicles

White background with green digits and borders, vertical or horizontal Palestinian flag depending on era, numbers end with “1X” (e.g., 3-0457-12)

Governmental Personal Vehicles

White background with black digits and borders, same flag design as private, numbers end with “5X”, format 3-####-5X

Motorcycles

Rarely installed in Gaza Strip, would follow same format as cars when used

Private Vehicles

White background with black digits and borders, vertical Palestinian flag on right (2012-2021) or horizontal flag with “Palestine” text overlay, all numbers start with “3”, private vehicle numbers end with “0X” (e.g., 3-1324-06)

Public Vehicles

White background with blue digits and borders, Palestinian flag design, public vehicle (taxis) numbers end with “2X”, municipal vehicle numbers end with “4X” (e.g., 3-0457-20 for taxi)

Governmental Vehicles

White background with red digits and borders, Palestinian flag design, numbers end with “5X”, includes police cars, Ministry of Health ambulances, and other government agencies (e.g., 3-0124-50)
