Luxembourg License Plate Format

Luxembourg vehicle registration plates bear maximum of six characters. Standard series uses format of two letters followed by four digits. Numbers issued at national level with no indication of regional origin. Plates have black characters on yellow background with standard blue EU stripe on left. Current format enacted by parliament June 2003. Two-letter/four-digit format follows unusual sequence making it difficult to determine car’s age from plate. Leading zeroes permitted on standard plates. Some letter combinations reserved for special plates. Standard plate for small vehicles (mopeds) is smaller size comprising two letters and two digits.
