Jersey License Plate Format

Jersey registration plates consist of the letter “J” followed by one to six digits in a sequential numbering system in use since 1915. Plates are flat, unbroken, and use prescribed British standard font. They may optionally incorporate Jersey’s coat of arms in a white strip on the left, with the country identifier GBJ (Great Britain and Northern Ireland – Jersey) and text “JERSEY” below. This design resembles EU standard plates but is not blue and not valid under the Vienna Convention. Registration marks are issued by Driver and Vehicle Standards, a Government of Jersey department, and are entirely separate from other jurisdictions.

Hire Cars

Black text on white/yellow background with silver letter “H” on red background square displayed on left side of plate, format J + 1-6 digits

Motorcycles (Learner)

Black text on white background (rear only) with integrated “L” plate, format J + 1-6 digits, mandatory for learner riders

Motorcycles (Probationary)

Black text on white background (rear only) with integrated “P” plate, format J + 1-6 digits, mandatory for first 12 months after passing motorcycle test

Older Vehicles

White text on black background (optional for vehicles registered before January 1, 1976), format J + 1-6 digits

Temporary Imports

Black text on white/yellow background, format E + number (prefix “E” designates temporary imports from countries where vehicles are not required to be registered)

Trader Plates

White text on red background, format J + 1-6 digits, flexible magnetic material, exclusively for bona fide motor traders on unregistered vehicles used in connection with their business

Cherished/Premium Plates

Same format as standard but low-digit combinations (especially 1-4 digits like J1, J12, J123, J1234) sold at official auctions for premium prices, purchaser acquires display rights not ownership
