ANPR for India

Indian License Plate Format

Indian vehicle registration plates mandatory since 1903, issued by district-level Regional Transport Office (RTO) of respective states. Plates placed front and back. By law, all plates required in modern Hindu-Arabic numerals with Latin letters. Two-letter state codes introduced 1980s (previously three-letter district codes without state mention caused confusion).

Special Plate Types in India

Trade Certificate

Format XX NN Z NNNN TC NNNN where XX = state code, NN = district/RTO, Z = vehicle category (A-motorcycle, C-car, F-bus, G-truck and other), NNNN = dealer number, TC = trade certificate, NNNN = vehicle number assigned by dealer, valid up to 5 years (e.g., LA01C0001TC0001)

BH (Bharat) Series

Format YY BH NNNN XX where YY = year registered, BH = Bharat, NNNN = random number 1-9999, XX = letter series, pan-India registration for government employees and private sector employees of firms with 4+ state offices (e.g., 22 BH 3456 AB)

Diplomatic Missions

Format NNN XX NNNN where NNN = mission number (1-3 digits, 1 reserved for head/ambassador), XX = mission type (CD-embassy, CC-consulate, UN-United Nations, IOD-international organization), NNNN = sequential 1-4 digits (e.g., 123 CD 0001)

Armed Forces

Format ↑YY Z NNNNNN C where ↑ = broad arrow, YY = procurement year, Z = vehicle type (A-motorcycle, B-car, C-truck up to 3t, D-truck over 3t, K-ambulance, X-combat vehicle and other), NNNNNN = 6-digit serial, C = check letter (e.g., ↑22B 012345A)

High Security Registration Plates (HSRP)

Mandatory tamper-proof plates with chromium hologram, laser numbering, retro-reflective film with “India” at 45-degree angle, embossed characters, “IND” in light blue under hologram, implementation varies by state

VA (Vintage) Series

Format XX VA YY NNNN where XX = state code, VA = vintage, YY = series letters, NNNN = unique number 1-9999, for vehicles 50+ years old in original form, restricted to specific use like rallies (e.g., MH VA AA 1234)

Temporary Registration

Format T MMYY XX NNNN ZZ where T = temporary, MMYY = purchase month/year, XX = state code, NNNN = 4-digit sequential, ZZ = letter series, valid up to 6 months (e.g., T1123LA0123A)
