Egyptian License Plate Format

Egyptian vehicle registration plates are rectangular aluminum plates introduced in 2008. The top section displays “Egypt” in English (uppercase) and Arabic in black font, with background colors varying by vehicle type. The system uses color-coded headers to distinguish vehicle categories. Since 2022, plates use Calibri typeface for English text and Square Kufic typeface for Arabic text. The international vehicle registration code for Egypt is EG (changed from ET in April 2024).

Cairo: 000-XXX (3 digits + 3 letters)
Giza: 0000-XX (4 digits + 2 letters)
All other governorates: 0000-XXX (4 digits + 3 letters)

Script

Arabic script using a restricted set of letters to avoid visual ambiguity; Arabic numerals

Giza (no Arabic prefix), Cairo (أ), Alexandria (س), Qalyubia (ق), Sharqia (ر), Monufia (م), Beheira (ب), Dakahlia (د), Gharbia (ع), Kafr El Sheikh (ل), Faiyum (ف), Beni Suef (و), Minya (ن), Asyut (ى), Sohag (هـ), and others

Motorcycles

Black text on white background with light blue header bar (private) or dark blue header bar (police), smaller than standard plates, registration code displayed in two lines

Police

White text on white background with dark blue header bar, “Police” in Arabic and English replaces “Egypt” in upper section, registration format varies by governorate

Diplomatic

Black text on white background with green header bar, format ###-## (numbers only, no letters), first three digits identify country/organization, last two digits identify rank

Taxis

Buses
