ANPR for Bulgaria

Bulgarian License Plate Format

Bulgarian plates display black characters on white background with EU blue strip showing flag and “BG” code. Format consists of province code, serial number, and series letters. Since 1992, only letters common to both Latin and Cyrillic alphabets are used (12 letters total). Provincial codes show region of first registration only.

C/CA/CB – Sofia City, CO – Sofia Province, A – Burgas, B – Varna, PB – Plovdiv, P – Ruse, E – Blagoevgrad, TX – Dobrich, H – Shumen, K – Kardzhali, and 18 other provinces (28 total)

Special Plate Types in Bulgaria

Temporary Registration

White background with black text and red vertical strip on right showing expiry date (month/year)
– Н prefix: Unregistered vehicles and export (e.g., 123 Н 456)
– М prefix: Same as Н, introduced 2017 after Н series exhausted (e.g., 123 М 456)
– В prefix: Car dealers, В = временен (temporary) (e.g., 123 В 456)

Diplomatic

White on red background, first 2 digits = country code, smaller digits in lower right = expiry year
– C prefix: Diplomatic status (e.g., C 01 2345 26)
– CC prefix: Consular status (e.g., CC 02 3456 26)
– CT prefix: Other diplomatic staff (e.g., CT 03 4567 26)

Electric Vehicles

Dark green text on white background with EU blue strip (from November 2022)
– EA prefix: Electric automobiles (e.g., EA 1234 AB)
– EM prefix: Electric motorcycles (e.g., EM 5678 CD)

Military

White on dark blue background with BA prefix (Bulgarian Army) and 6 digits, format BA 123 456, EU blue strip on left (replaced red В on white in 2006)

Civil Protection

hite on dark blue with CP prefix (Civil Protection) and 5 digits, format CP 12 345, EU blue strip on left (formerly ГЗ, no longer used)

Foreign Temporary

Light blue background with white text, format ХХ 1234 YY where YY = expiry year, series continues with ХН after ХХ exhausted (from 2019)
