Belgian License Plate Format

Belgian vehicle registration plates are driver-specific, meaning plates transfer with the owner rather than staying with the vehicle. Since November 2010, Belgium uses European standard format with distinctive red characters on white background (RAL 3003). The rear plate is state-supplied, while front plates are owner-supplied. Registration format has no geographic location information.

Special Plate Types in Belgium

Diplomatic

The initial letters (CD – Corps Diplomatique) are printed in green or red, followed by a dot “.” and 4 symbols printed in red.

Court and royal household

Cars used by the king and queen have single-digit numbers only (1 to 9). Cars used by other members of the royal family have two digits.

Officials

Single letter followed by 1-3 numbers. Letter indicates position: “A” for Ministers and Ministers of State, “P” for Parliament members, “E” for regional government members and services.

Temporary/Export

White characters on red background with blue EU band on left (stars and “B”). Format: XA-##-AAA or WA-##-AAA. First character: “X” for export within 30 days, “W” for temporary registration.

Personalized

Fully customizable since 31 March 2014. Must include at least one letter. Cannot imitate reserved combinations (CD-1234, A-0 to A-99999, etc.).

Dealer

Green characters on white background with EU flag on left. Format: Z as initial letter, A-Y as second letter (e.g., ZA-123). Plates starting “ZZ” reserved for test drives.

Eurocontrol

Previously blue plates with 3 numbers followed by “EURO”. Discontinued; now use standard 8-AAA-111 series or current international format.

Military

White background with black numbers and Belgian flag on left side. Special plate Nr 1 reserved for the King. Used by Belgian Land Component vehicles.

NATO Headquarters

HeadquartersFormerly red plates with white letters “SB” (later “M”) followed by number. Now integrated into standard international format.
