Austrian License Plate Format
Austrian vehicle registration plates use a district-based system with regional codes. Plates feature the EU blue band on the left displaying the country code “A” and twelve gold stars. The format includes district abbreviation followed by alphanumeric sequence.

Special Plate Types in Austria
Temporary plates
Temporary plates are cyan with white lettering, featuring a red strip on the right side showing the year the plate is valid.
Electric Vehicles
Green plates introduced in 2017 exclusively for electric vehicles, initially provided parking charge exemptions in Vienna, Innsbruck, Klagenfurt, Wels, Linz, Graz, Mödling, Zell am See, Klosterneuburg, and Krems
Foreign trailer plates
White letters on red background for foreign trailers towed by Austrian vehicles, displaying same sequence as tractor, design changed in 2021 to include EU strip (e.g., XX 123 AB on red)
Export transit plates
White letters on cyan background for vehicles being exported, valid for 3 to 21 days
Diplomatic Vehicles
Dash instead of state coat of arms, up to five digits only starting with 1 (e.g., XX – 12345)
