Liechtenstein License Plate Format
Liechtenstein registration plates consist of the letters “FL” (Fürstentum Liechtenstein), followed by a small coat of arms of Liechtenstein and up to five digits. Standard plates feature white characters on black background, a color scheme introduced in 1916. The current design was introduced in 1972, with format and font aligned to Swiss license plates. Due to the country’s small size (42,000 inhabitants), no regional distinguishing codes are needed. Since 1999, Liechtenstein has been the only European country to use standard black license plates. Numbers are assigned consecutively in ascending order to vehicle owners, not vehicles, and can be registered as interchangeable plates for maximum two vehicles.

Agricultural/Forestry Vehicles
Black text on green background, format FL 21-2000, maximum speed 40km/h, non-commercial use only, single front plate (can be mounted front or rear).
Mopeds/E-bikes
Dark yellow text on black background, size 100×140mm, format FL + 1-5 digits, numbers FL 80000 upwards (jumped from FL 31xxx in 1985), requires annually renewed insurance control mark valid January 1 to May 31 following year
Official Vehicles (Princely Family)
White text on black background, format FL 1-10, FL 1/2/3/4/6/8/10 assigned to Princely Family, FL 5 to Government/Prime Minister, FL 7/9/11-20 to Liechtenstein Police, single-digit plates only displayed during official occasions
Industrial/Utility Vehicles
Black text on blue background, format FL 21-2000, exclusively for work purposes (fire engines, construction, forestry, road maintenance, winter service, cleaning vehicles). As of June 2021: 799 vehicles, 268 trailers registered
Exceptional Vehicles
Black text on light brown background, format FL 21 onwards or FL 5000 onwards (trailers), for vehicles not complying with general weight/size regulations, require special written permit (mobile cranes, heavy excavators, extra-wide tractors, heavy transport vehicles)
Temporary Plates
White text on black background with raised vertical red bar and red control sticker showing expiry month/year, format FL 90000-92999 (cars/trucks), FL 95000-95099 (trailers), FL 1800 onwards (motorcycles), front plates show dot instead of coat of arms.
Dealer Plates
White text on black background with additional letter “U” (Unternehmen / companies), format FL 101 U-300 U (cars/trucks/trailers), FL 501 U onwards (motorcycles). Green/blue background variants available for agricultural/work vehicles.
