Swiss License Plate Format
Swiss vehicle registration plates consist of 2-letter canton code followed by number with up to 6 digits (format AB·123456). Rear plates display two shields: Swiss flag and canton flag. Front plates size 300×80mm, rear plates 300×160mm (high format) or 500×110mm (long format, reintroduced 1987). Registration plates assigned to car owner, not to vehicle – if owner changes vehicle, same plates transfer to new vehicle. Previous vehicle receives new owner’s plates. Possible to own multiple vehicles sharing same plates by physically unmounting and mounting between vehicles owned by same person. In some cantons, retired plates become available again after certain time. Current size system introduced 1972.

Utility Vehicles
Black on blue background, format VD 7032 (canton code + up to 4 digits). For construction vehicles, snow removal, fire brigade, etc. Front 300×80mm, rear 300×160mm or 500×110mm.
Exceptional Vehicles
Black on brown background with letter U, format SG U 59 (canton + U + digits). For vehicles not complying with mass and weight regulations. Standard sizes with shields on rear.
Agricultural Vehicles
Black on green background, format GR·1999 (canton code + digits). Standard sizes, rear plate with Swiss and canton shields.
Military Vehicles
Yellow on black background, format M·1897 (letter M + digits). Standard sizes, rear plate with shields.
Dealer/Workshop Vehicles
Black on white with additional letter U, format BE 1957·U (canton + digits + U). For vehicle dealers and workshops. Standard sizes with shields.
Temporary Registration
Black on white with control mark showing expiry date, format BE 760604 (canton + digits). Red circular control mark displays expiry date. Standard sizes with shields.
Temporary Duty Unpaid
Black on white with letter Z and control mark, format LU·9 Z U (canton + digit + Z + letter). Red control mark included. Standard sizes.
Diplomatic
White on green background with prefixes CD (diplomatic missions and staff), CC (consular posts and officials), and AT (administrative or technical staff of diplomatic missions).
Light Motor Vehicles
Black on yellow background, format JU 90141 (canton + up to 5 digits). For light motor vehicles and small motorcycles limited to 45 km/h. Standard sizes.
