Slovak License Plate Format
Slovak vehicle registration plates use black characters on white background with EU blue stripe (euroband) displaying 12 EU stars and country code SK on the left side. The Slovak Coat of Arms appears centrally between the prefix and serial numbers. Standard size 520×110mm. From 1997-2022, system used district-based coding with format XX-NNNLL where XX was district code. From January 2023, new state-wide numbering system introduced, replacing district codes with sequential alphabetical assignment starting at AA-001AA while preserving same layout (2 letters – 3 digits – 2 letters). Three design varieties remain valid: 1997-2004 plates with coat of arms in top left and SK in bottom left with dash separator; 2004-2006 plates with euroband replacing coat of arms; 2006-present plates with coat of arms replacing dash while retaining euroband.

Special Plate Types in Slovakia
Trailers
Black on white, format XX-1YA (first serial letter always Y), progression 001YA-999YZ. Applies to all trailer types including mobile homes and cargo trailers. EU stripe and coat of arms included.
Motorcycles
Black on white, same coding and series as regular plates (e.g., DS-125AC can be both regular and motorcycle plate), two different motorcycle-specific sizes available. EU stripe and coat of arms included.
Personalized
Black on white, format XX-LLLLL, XX-LLLLN or XX-LLLNN (district code or prefix + 5 characters), available for extra fee. Unlike standard plates, Q and W permitted. EU stripe and coat of arms included.
Dealer/Trade
Red text on white background, format XX-M123 or XX-MA123 (first letter M), progression M001-M999, then MA001-MA999 through MZ999. EU stripe and coat of arms.
Temporary
Black on yellow background, format XX-V123 or XX-VA123 (first letter V), progression V001-V999, then VA001-VZ999. Red stripe indicating expiration date. EU stripe and coat of arms.
Electric Vehicles
Green text on white background (since 2023 reform), format EL-123CD or EV-123CD (prefixes EL and EV reserved for electric vehicles). With EU stripe and coat of arms.
Diplomatic
Yellow text on dark blue background, format EE-12345 or ZZ-12345 (5 digits), no EU stripe or coat of arms.
Military
Black on white, format 12-34567 (2 digits – 5 digits), standard size with EU stripe and Slovak coat of arms.
Import
Green text on white background, format C-12345 or CL-12345, maximum validity one year, standard size with EU stripe and coat of arms.
