Portuguese License Plate Format

Portuguese vehicle registration plates use a simple, sequential system with no link to geographical locations. The system consists of three groups of two characters. The current format introduced in March 2020 is AA 00 AA (starting with AA 01 AA, with 00 reserved), incorporating letters W, Y, and K which were never used before. This sequence is expected to last approximately 45 years. Plates feature black characters on white reflective background with EU blue stripe on left showing Portuguese ‘P’ code. Standard size is 520×110mm. The 2020 format eliminated the yellow ribbon (previously showing month/year of first registration) and removed dashes between character groups. Registration tied to vehicle, not owner, with authorities issuing registration number and owner responsible for having standardized plate manufactured.

Trailers: Format X-000000 or XX-000000 (1-2 letters district office code + up to 6 digits sequential). District codes: A-Ponta Delgada (Azores), AN-Angra do Heroísmo, AV-Aveiro, BE-Beja, BG-Bragança, BR-Braga, C-Coimbra, CB-Castelo Branco, E-Évora, FA-Faro, GD-Guarda, H-Horta, L-Lisbon, LE-Leiria, M-Funchal (Madeira), P-Porto, PT-Portalegre, S-Santarém, SE-Setúbal, VC-Viana do Castelo, VR-Vila Real, VI-Viseu.
Export Vehicles: Inverse format of trailers (sequential number first + district code), same district codes as trailers, letters “EXP” displayed in designated area

Portuguese Navy

Sequence AP-00-00 reserved exclusively for Navy vehicles

Portuguese Air Force

Sequence AM-00-00 reserved exclusively for Air Force vehicles

NATO

Format NATO followed by four numbers

Portuguese GNR

Special sequence GNR A-01 to GNR Z-9999, letter after GNR identifies vehicle type: B-armoured vehicle, J-off-roader, L-patrol vehicle, T-traffic, etc. Standard colors black on white with EU stripe

Diplomatic Vehicles

Red text on white background without EU blue ribbon, formats: 000-CD000 (diplomats), 000-CC000 (consular personnel), 000-FM000 (non-diplomatic embassy personnel). First three digits identify country

Export Vehicles

Inverse sequence of trailers (registration number first, then office code), letters “EXP” placed in yellow ribbon above date (when yellow ribbon was in use)

Dealer/Unregistered Vehicles for Sale

White text on red background without EU blue ribbon, display dealer name followed by identification number

Trailers

Two groups separated by dash, format X-000000 or XX-000000 (1-2 letters office code + up to 6 digits sequential number) (e.g., L-186880)

Portuguese Army

Sequences MG-00-00, ME-00-00, MX-00-00, tactical vehicles use black background with white letters/numbers
