ANPR for Italy

Italian License Plate Format

Italian vehicle registration plates can only be made by Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato, assigned by territorial offices of Italian Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport. Must be permanently attached to single vehicle from first registration to disposal. Current alphanumeric serial code introduced February 28, 1994, consists of seven black characters on rectangular or squared white background with defined format (2 letters, 3 numbers, 2 letters) issued nationwide regardless of local registration office.

AA 000 AA (2 letters, 3 digits, 2 letters);

Script

Latin (letters except I, O, Q, U excluded, treated as base-22 digits)

Provincial Codes

An optional blue band on the right may display provincial code: RM/Roma – Rome, MI – Milan, NA – Naples, TO – Turin, PA – Palermo, GE – Genoa, BO – Bologna, FI – Florence, BA – Bari, VE – Venice, and other provincial codes

Special Plate Types in Italy

Motorcycles

White background with black text, blue EU band left (IRL flag + stars), blue band right with yellow circle showing registration year and optional province code, format AA NNNNN (2 letters, 5 digits)

Trailers

Standard vehicle format since February 2013, pattern XA 123 AA where X = reserved letter, mover repetition plates no longer needed for new trailers (e.g., XA 123 AA)

Mopeds

White background with black text, format X NNNNN where X or Y (Local Police) followed by 5 characters (digits 1, 0 and letters A, E, I, O, Q, U excluded) (e.g., X B2C3D)

Diplomatic Corps (CD)

White background with black text, blue letters CD, format CD NNNN AA where NNNN = 4 digits, AA = country code in blue (e.g., CD 0213 XG for Vatican)

Carabinieri

Red prefix “CC” (Corpo di Carabinieri), format CC LL NNN for vehicles, CC A NNNN for motorcycles, separate armed forces branch (e.g., CC DF 948)

Temporary/Export (EE)

Black prefix “EE” (Escursionisti Esteri), format EE NNN AA, expiry date sticker space on top, motorcycles EE L NNN (e.g., EE 053 AM)

Military – Army (EI)

Red prefix “EI”, format EI LL NNN with green dot between letters and numbers, black province code (e.g., EI BL 235)

Consular Corps (CC)

Same as diplomatic but CC prefix, format CC NNNN AA (e.g., CC 0213 AF)

United Nations (UN / UNP / UNT)

Format UN / UNP / UNT NNN AA with 3 digits (e.g., UN 147 AA)
