Irish License Plate Format
Irish vehicle registration plates (commonly “number plates” or “registration plates”) are visual indications of motor vehicle registration mandatory since 1903 on most motor vehicles used on public roads. Alphanumeric marks (officially “identification marks”) issued by local authority where vehicle first registered. Vehicle’s number plate determined at first registration, county/city code from first owner’s postal address. Registration fixed on one vehicle until de-registered (exported, destroyed), cannot be transferred to other vehicles.

Special Plate Types in Ireland
Imported Used Vehicles
Registered based on original registration year in source country, not import year. Sequence starts at higher numbers (Dublin 120000+) (e.g., 10-D-120006)
Reserved Numbers
First number each year in Cork, Dublin, Limerick, Waterford reserved for respective Lord Mayor (e.g., 191-D-1 for Dublin Lord Mayor 2019)
Trade Plates
White letters on dark green background, reversed format with trader number first, county second, year last (e.g., NNNN-CC-YY)
Historic Vehicles (ZV)
Optional alternative to current scheme for vehicles 30+ years old registering in Ireland for first time
Diplomatic
Similar to civilian format with small CD between county code and serial number (e.g., 24-CD-D-12345), CD not always displayed
Defence Forces
Silver letters on black background, no Irish-language county name
