ANPR for Indonesia

Indonesian License Plate Format

Indonesian vehicle registration plates required on motorized vehicles, displayed both front and back. Issuing regulated by SAMSAT (Sistem Administrasi Manunggal Satu Atap – One-stop Administration Services Office), collaboration between Indonesian National Police, provincial offices of regional revenue, and national mandatory vehicle insurance operator Jasa Raharja. Lettering convention legacy of Dutch colonial era, follows old Karesidenan/residencies system from 1920s, does not reflect current provincial divisions.

L NNNN LL (letter, up to 4 digits, 1-2 letters suffix, expiry date below)

Latin letters and Western Arabic numerals (since 2011), previously Eastern Arabic numerals in old plates

arrow City Codes

B – Jakarta, D – Bandung, L – Surabaya, H – Semarang, N – Malang, AB – Yogyakarta, F – Bogor, E – Cirebon, Z – Garut, T – Purwokerto, and many others corresponding to old Dutch Karesidenan regions/residencies/Territorial Police system

Special Plate Types in Indonesia

Commercial/Public Transport

Yellow background with black letters for buses, taxis, angkot, auto rickshaws, commercial trucks (e.g., B 5678 DEF)

Government/Emergency

Red background with white letters for fire departments, government ambulances, officials (e.g., B 9012 GHI)

Electric Vehicles (all categories)

Standard plate colours by category with mandatory blue bottom trim

Diplomatic Corps (CD)

White background with black letters, format CD NNN NN where NNN = country/organization code, NN = serial (01 reserved for ambassador) (e.g., CD 66 88)

Temporary Registration

Red on white background for unregistered vehicles nationwide; or black on white with special suffix (SS, LK, AK, PC, PD, AZ, BC) for Greater Jakarta, valid 30 days (e.g., B 2814 SSP)

Military Vehicles (TNI)

Non-civilian colour schemes with numeric format NNNNN-SS, colours vary by branch such as Army, Navy, Air Force or Armed Forces HQ (e.g., 23456-02)

Police

Yellow on black background, format NNNNN-SS where SS = region code (e.g., 67890-00)

Free-Trade Zone

Green background with black letters for vehicles exclusively in free-trade zones like Batam (e.g., B 3456 JKL)

Vanity/Beautiful Numbers

Same format as regular plates, customized combinations at premium prices (e.g., B 10 LA)
