ANPR for Iceland

Icelandic License Plate Format

Icelandic registration plates issued by Icelandic Transport Authority. Plates made of aluminum with reflective base and embossed characters. Follow EU standard with Icelandic emblem and letters “IS” on left side, standard EU size 520×110mm. Current format introduced January 1, 1989; district system used 1938-December 31, 1988.

Special Plate Types in Iceland

Commercial VAT-Free

White background with red frame and red characters, diamond symbol before number, format AB 123 or AB C12, cannot be used for private purposes, VAT deductible if requirements met (e.g., ◊AB 123)

Diplomatic (CD)

Green background with white frame and white characters, format CD A12 where CD = diplomatic corps, third character = embassy nationality (e.g., CD A12)

Tax-Free Diesel (“Oil”)

Dark yellow background with black frame and black characters, format AB 123 or AB C12, for vehicles burning fuel in stationary position – fire trucks, rescue, construction (e.g., AB 123)

Temporary Dealer (RN)

Red background with black frame and black characters, format RN 123, always starts with RN, sticker shows validation year (e.g., RN 456)

Special Off-road

White background with green frame and green characters, format AB C12, lifted rectangle for inspection label, for vehicles used almost exclusively off-road or exceeding normal weight/size limits (e.g., AB C12)

Tractor

White background with blue frame and blue characters, format AB 123 or AB C12, no inspection sticker, not subject to Transport Authority inspection (e.g., AB 789)

Moped/Quadricycle

Blue background with white frame and white characters, format AB C12, for mopeds and quadricycles with top speed 25-45 km/h (e.g., AB C56)

Vanity/Personalized

White background with blue frame and blue characters, 2-6 characters from Icelandic alphabet and numbers, cannot follow standard format, inspection sticker on left instead of country identifier (e.g., 123ABC)
