ANPR for China

Chinese License Plate Format

Chinese vehicle registration plates use provincial abbreviation character, letter code for city/region, and five-digit alphanumeric combination. Plates issued by local traffic management offices under Ministry of Public Security. Current GA36-2014 standard uses aluminum material with embossed characters. Hong Kong and Macau maintain separate plate systems.

Special Plate Types in China

Police Vehicles

White background, format X·LLNNN警 with red 警 (police) character, issued to traffic police, courts, and procuratorates (e.g., 京·AB123警)

Military

White background with red letter prefix, format XL·NNNNN – V for Central Military Commission, K for Air Force, H for Navy, VA/VB/VC/VD for various departments (e.g., K·A12345)

Consulate

Black background with white characters, format NNN·NNN领 where first 3 digits = country code, last 3 digits = sequential number, 领 (lǐng)

Embassy

Black background with white characters, format NNN·NNN使 where first 3 digits = country code, last 3 digits = sequential number, 使 (shǐ) = embassy (e.g., 224·001使 for US Ambassador)

Energy Vehicles

Green gradient background, format P L NNNNNN where P = provincial character, L = city letter, 6-character alphanumeric string with D/E for electric, F for other new energy types (e.g., 沪A D12345 for small electric vehicle in Shanghai)

Airport

Green background with white characters, designation 民航 (min hang = Civilian Air Transportation) for vehicles inside airport perimeters; white background with dark green text for vehicles in airport vicinity (e.g., SPIA-A00 series at Shanghai Pudong)

Automobile Test

Yellow background with black characters, suffix 试 (shǐ = test) for vehicle testing (e.g., 京A 1234试)

Driving School

Separate plates for test-drive vehicles (教练车 jiaolian che) and examination vehicles (考试车 kaoshi che)

Interim

Paper plate affixed to windshield, valid for 15 days, for temporary use within or outside administrative area
