German License Plate Format
German vehicle registration plates (Kraftfahrzeug-Kennzeichen) use a standardized alphanumeric format in use since 1956. These plates feature the EU blue band on the left displaying the country code “D” and twelve gold stars. The plate format consists of a district area code of one to three letters, followed by one or two letters and one to four digits, with a maximum of eight characters total.

Special Plate Types in Germany
H – Historic Vehicles

0 – Diplomatic Plates
Begin with “0” followed by mission number (e.g., 0-921)
Y – Military Vehicles
German Bundeswehr uses “Y” prefix (e.g., Y-123 456)
Seasonal Plates
Display two 2-digit numbers indicating validity months
German plates may include special suffixes: “H” designates historic vehicles over 30 years old, while “E” identifies electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles. Diplomatic plates begin with “0” followed by the mission number, military vehicles use “Y” prefix, and seasonal plates display validity months. The system supports German umlauts (Ä, Ö, Ü) in area codes.
